El Molino is a café-concert in Barcelona, one of the most renowned in Europe for much of the twentieth century and the nineteenth century, and has always been considered a transgressor space of the allowed limits, with a great ability to create its own languages, double meaning, with the motive of escaping the censorship of each era. With its characteristic red windmill blades on the façade, it was the most famous of the theaters of Paralelo, an avenue that came to be known as «the theater street of Europe», due to the great concentration of scenic spaces it had.

The original building of 1898 was, in fact, an ephemeral wooden construction. In 1910, Manuel Joaquim Raspall was commissioned to build a new permanent building. Raspall was a theater enthusiast and already had some experience with the construction of the Teatro Cómico (in the same Paralelo), the Granvía and the Teatro Triunfo.

Despite being considered a modernist architect, Raspall quickly moved on to noucentisme and El Molino reflects this trend. It was inaugurated on December 17, 1910 as the Petit Moulin Rouge, although it was familiarly known as the Moulin.
